Spoilt for choice? Select between granite, laminate, marble, quartz and so many other options for your kitchen countertop. No confusion!
The two main ingredients that go into making a kitchen are the cabinets and the counter. While your cabinets help you organise your kitchen, the counter is the central workstation that brings everything together.
Choosing the right material for the countertop can make life simpler in the kitchen. Because if your countertop needs to be easy to clean and maintain, not feel the heat of the hot pans and be okay no matter what falls on it – oil, water or even knives. Ouch!
To clear up any confusion, we’ve put together a list of countertop materials and why you should or shouldn’t choose them.
Made from natural stone, granite is one of the most popular countertop choices in India. It is reasonably priced, can tolerate heat, is easy to clean and quite durable. You wouldn’t see many scratches on this surface. Just make sure it has a strong base as granite is heavy!
If you are looking for a pocket friendly option, laminate countertops is the way to go. With multiple designs to choose from, you can decide the look that you prefer. Laminate is easy to clean and light weight as well. However, it is not a durable option as it is prone to scratches, stains and doesn’t do well when it comes to enduring heat. Go for this only if you are okay redoing your kitchen in a few years.
One of the most elegant options, marble countertops can surely add that touch of panache to your kitchen. It definitely is on the expensive side and can stain if not maintained properly.
One of the newest favourites in Indian markets, Quartz countertops are highly durable, visually appealing and are slowly replacing granite countertops. It even resists heat and stains, does well in moist conditions and is easier to maintain. And not just that, they come in a lot more variety than granite, ranging from earthy browns to bright reds!
Made from acrylic and polyester, solid surfaces like Corian are perfect for a contemporary look. Available in hundreds of bright colours and patterns including some eco-friendly ones, you can make your kitchen pop with colours with this one. However, we don’t recommend this for Indian kitchens, simply because it is susceptible to scratches and heat and doesn’t end up being a durable option.
Some other relatively rarely used options are stainless steel and tiles! While stainless steel is extremely durable, it does tend to be expensive and not to mention, noisy. Tiles on the other hand can bring in a unique look to your kitchen, are reasonably priced and you can mix and match the colours. However, they are tough when it comes to cleaning up.
And now you’re equipped to choose the right countertop material for your kitchen.
While laminate counter tops are extremely budget friendly, they are not at all durable. Granite is durable and cost-effective. But if looks and style is what you’re going for and don’t mind spending a little extra, both in terms of money and maintenance, then marble is what you want! Keep in mind Quartz countertops that are durable as well as give a range of options for styling.
